Now broadcasting from a new location.

Well many things have changed since my last  post before today.  When I last checked in I had been unemployed almost 6 months and had given up on getting my appliance repair business off the ground. About a month  after that post I was cold called by a recruiter for a Multi- National company asking if I was interested in becoming a Service Tech ( for floor care equipment) for their US Service division. I asked for more details and was directed to their online job description. Two weeks later after several phone interviews I accepted a offer and 1 week after that I was flying to NJ for orientation and initial training. Starting the end of May I hit the road in Colorado working and stayed mostly very busy up until first part of this year when a major customer opted to consolidate all their various repair and maintenance needs through a sole source provider. For quite awhile I was kinda hanging loose waiting on the company to make a decision on what direction to go. Eventually they offered me a transfer to a new location, it was a tough decision but they are a very good company to work for and being former military moving, although a hassle, is something I am used to. So I am now broadcasting live from I-70 and the Ohio state line. and spend my work days covering service calls from West of Indy to North and East of Columbus and South into KY.

As you can imagine their is lots of driving involved in my job thus lots of listening to radio with news and talk. Many of day while driving I work up  and flesh out a lot of ,in my mind, good posts about current events. Then I get busy working on something and it all flys away into the ether by the time I get home.

One great thing about moving here was it puts me within driving distance of that grand purveyor of gun knowledge TAM who I hope very much to be able to meet in the near future. Tam is one of small group of gun bloggers who I look to for information that I can trust and I have never had to take a break from reading due to her posting getting to intense or blind  to the world.

Just four of them…

I am probably wasting my time here, yet after watching various gun videos I feel compelled. Folks there are four hard and fast rules for gun safety, and they are really simple.

  1. All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
  2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
  3. Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target.
  4. Identify your target, and what is behind it.

It is not that hard I have seen four year olds that can recite them. Surely a full grown adult can remember them.

New High School Class Suggestion

I started a tongue in cheek post about getting the Government to pay us to exercise our 2nd amendment rights. In the process I made a comment about a high school elective that they need to offer.  After some thought this is a idea that I really think has merit.

The class I am talking about would be a complete elective but would count as credit toward graduation I would suggest maybe 1/2 PE and 1/2 civics. The class would have a segment on hand to hand self defense , I would suggest Krav Mag. There would be a segment on First Aid concentrating on Traumatic Injuries, CPR, Gunshot wounds, A segment on The legal aspects of self defense and lethal force. As a adjunct to this class Students would be offered the opportunity , but not required, to attend MAG-20 classes with the Massad Ayoob Group and attend any state required CCW class for free.  I am not exactly sure how I would split the class time but think that probably 3/4 of the year on Krav Mag with the last quarter being split between first aid and Legalities of Self Defense. The MAG 20 and CCW classes could be spread out through the year since they generally fall on weekends. I know the MAG 20 classes would be a stretch if all schools started offering these classes but state school boards could sponsor the classroom portion 2 or 3 times a year. I would even accept another intensive class if MAG 20 not available.

I honestly think this would be a excellent offering for our high school student to help them as they move into adult life.

New Book from Marko Kloos

Marko Kloos author extraordinaire of the Space Kablooie series of books “The Frontlines Series”  has a new book out just released today. I will let him tell you in his own words what it is about:

In this book, Andrew and his brothers-and-sisters-in-arms finally try to pry Mars away from the Lankies. They have a good plan, some great new hardware, and a bunch of freshly-trained troops to throw into the battle. But everyone who served knows that battle plans never survive first contact with the enemy…and the Lankies may have their own surprises in store for the combined forces of Earth.

So you want to discuss the “Gun Problem in America”

So you want to discuss the gun problem. I am willing but lets first define the starting point. The best starting point should be the actual starting point for law in our country.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Militia :
1.a military force that is raised from the civil population to supplement a regular army in an emergency.
2.all able-bodied civilians eligible by law for military service.
3. a military force that engages in rebel typically in opposition to a regular army.

Now the reasons that we would need a militia are two-fold.  First we need a group to draw from in times of extreme emergency, anybody remember “Red Dawn”. There no doubt in my mind that when push comes to shove that a majority of gun owners would turn out to fight if a Red Dawn moment happened. The second reason we need a militia would be covered by definition three above. in short to oppose tyranny of our government.

Now for the Militia to be truly well armed, they would need all the weapons that a army would have. Since it is clearly stated “keep and Bear” that would mean that the people shall be able to keep and bear any weapon that our military forces have, so that we the people can serve as a effective well armed militia as needed. Thus we need to wipe out every law that restricts and/or infringes that initial right, as provided by the founders,in any way.

Of course once at this starting point there is no longer a gun problem ,never actually was one, we just need to address the crime problem.

US Appellate Court Judge thinks Constitution is not worth knowing

Judge Posner is quoted in a Slate article be sure to click through and read the whole thing. Please note the SWIPE at the Late Judge Scalia.

And on another note about academia and practical law, I see absolutely no value to a judge of spending decades, years, months, weeks, day, hours, minutes, or seconds studying the Constitution, the history of its enactment, its amendments, and its implementation (across the centuries—well, just a little more than two centuries, and of course less for many of the amendments). Eighteenth-century guys, however smart, could not foresee the culture, technology, etc., of the 21st century. Which means that the original Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the post–Civil War amendments (including the 14th), do not speak to today. David Strauss is right: The Supreme Court treats the Constitution like it is authorizing the court to create a common law of constitutional law, based on current concerns, not what those 18th-century guys were worrying about.

Richard Allen Posner  is a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in Chicago and a Senior Lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School. He is a leading figure in the field of law and economics, and was identified by The Journal of Legal Studies as the most cited legal scholar of the 20th century.

Really how can a judge, notably a “respected” Appellate Judge, be in his position and actually admit that he believe the Constitution is basically a dead document that judges should disregard. Should he be impeached? I know I am not thrilled to have this guy making  judicial decisions.

Recommended Author of the Week

If you like space western style writing you need to checkout Peter Grant . I have enjoyed each and ever one of his books as I have gotten them.  He recently released a old style western that I have not had the chance to read but based on his other works I sure I will love it when I get to it.  From his author bio on Amazon:

Peter Grant was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa. Between military service, the IT industry and humanitarian involvement, he traveled throughout sub-Saharan Africa before being ordained as a pastor. He later emigrated to the USA, where he worked as a pastor and prison chaplain until an injury forced his retirement. He is now a full-time writer, and married to a pilot from Alaska. They currently live in Texas.

“Why the gun is civilization.” by Marko Kloos

This essay by Marko Kloos relays my feeling exactly in the words that I never would have been able to put together as well as he did.  The essay originally appear here and is reprinted in its entirety by permission.

Marko is also a excellent published author of science fiction find his books here on Amazon and his website at

On terrorism and Life, Liberty and Happiness

In light of recent events the question is asked how do you stop terrorism and other mass killings?

The short answer. You can’t.

Background checks for guns are not going to stop it. The Orlando shooter was investigate by the FBI twice. He was also background checked for his job and once again when he bought the guns.

Assuming the background check stops the gun sale, they can steal them like The Heath High School shooter, or have a friend do s straw purchase like San Bernardino, or take over a  plane and crash it into a skyscraper, or make a fertilizer bomb, or even with a knife like here or here, maybe even sarin gas.

The point I am trying to get across is atrocities are going to happen. Where ever there is a will there is a way.

So what can WE do? First and foremost  do not live in fear. Beyond that:

  1. Learn first aid and how to render basic trauma care to the wounded. Keep a good first aid kit and know how to improvise with what you have.
  2. Learn to be proactive about your safety.

A. Be aware of those around you and learn to evaluate in your own mind the risk they impose. Also learn to recognize the areas that have a higher probability of attack. That man at the grocery acting all weird and twitchy that makes you want to get away hey get away, get groceries later. The man in the heavy coat walking down street on a 90 degree day probably just strange but why risk it.

B.  Get a gun and learn how to use it, if you do not like guns learn to improvise a weapon. Did you know that most dry chemical fire extinguishers will shoot a fairly concentrated plume of powder about 20-25 foot minimum,  and barring a gas mask or filter the cloud is very disorienting , blinding and can temporarily incapacitate.  Fire hoses can distract and knock a person down.  What it comes down to is where ever you are keep in mind what would I , do if? What weapons do I have available? You and only you are responsible for your well being and safety.

C. Anywhere you are you should know the nearest exit to the outside and at least one back up exit, not just for attacks but also for fires.

D. The advice to shelter in place inside the same building as a attacker is rarely a good idea unless you have multiple avenues of exit from your place of shelter, otherwise it is a trap not a shelter.

So in parting live life, love life, enjoy.  Remaining aware and alert and trusting your spidey sense will lead to longer life.

Lets get rid of the guns

A lot of people are talking about banning Ar-15s in the US. So lets go down that road a bit. For this mental exercise we are going to ban all semi-auto rifles because the only real difference between grand dads deer rifle and the Ar-15 is how it looks.

Assume we make semi-autos LEO and military only ( BTW military don’t want em they got much better weapons),  . They are still being made and shipped and since they are now banned they are going to bring lots more on the black market of the criminal underworld. So a enterprising crime syndicate will be stealing them  and opening a underworld market. Actually the market is already there just gotta expand it.

So we ban the production entirely, yet other countries are still making them so same thing just going to steal them.

So lets get the whole world to just quit making them, that not going to work because if you have a little skill and some machine shop equipment you can build em from scratch yourself with the right plans,  and you can’t eliminate the machining capability because it is used for all the other stuff we build.

Oh so we just ban the ammo right? except we use that ammo in all the guns that are not semi-auto.

Oh lets eliminate all guns. We are back to the whole make your own in a machine shop except now all you need is a piece of pipe and a nail to build a zip gun.

But with all guns being illegal all over the world for any reason there is no reason to manufacture ammo anymore. Except handloading is a thing using used casings. And a smart criminal enterprise would build a ammo factory to supply their underworld gun shop. And gun powder is easy to manufacture using available ingredients.

so eliminate the ingredients for gunpowder, not gonna happen but just assume it happens.  Well there are many other chemicals to make a propellant with. I know of a catalyst used for a industrial glue that when dried out and ground fine burns just like gunpowder just a lot dirtier.

So as you can see no matter what you do you will never get rid of guns, just like with drugs if you make them illegal there will be those that will abide by the law and there will be those that make a fortune off the illegal sales and manufacture.

None of the above takes into account the million up millions of guns that are still out there or the fact that there are many many more options to kill large amounts of people. While there is still people there will be violent people to do violence on others.

Random thoughts on Guns and Defense.

  1. Having a gun is not a magic shield. If you ever have  to use your gun in self defense chances are you are going to get injured and maybe seriously, but that gun may mean the difference in life and death.
  2. Use of a gun in self defense will bring legal scrutiny and probably arrest and trial along with massive legal bills.
  3. If you are in a place that is under attack by someone hell bent on a massive body count, you should assume you are already dead so anything you do to defend yourself can only improve the outcome. Guns  can make that defense easier.
  4. No normal person wants to kill another.  Those that choose to carry a weapon do so as a tool of last resort, for when all other options fail. Really the possible downsides of using a gun in self defense are very bad sowhy would we make it our first option.
  5. Even if you choose to not to carry a gun, you would be well advised to educate yourself via classes and/online about the self defense mindset taught by many gun instructors. Learn to evaluate the environment and people surrounding you. It may save your life.
  6. There is a saying about the best thing to bring to a gunfight is a gun. I disagree, is best to not even bring yourself. If you have to go to the gunfight the best thing to have is your brain without that your gun not much help.
  7. The only way to end gun violence is to eliminate violent people before they get that way

“More Guns Won’t Stop This” –A Rant

Three days after and simplistic memes abound.  Everyone has retreated to their established positions and they’re lobbing the same old slogans back and forth.

49 people — 49 Americans — are still dead.  There is no way to make it not have happened.  “More guns won’t stop this,” I’m told, and yet it took police, with guns, to stop it, in part by adding a 50th body to the count, killing the shooter himself.
